The island of Bermuda is named after the browser Spanish Juan Bermudez who discovered it in 1503. Of British bases there from 1609 after a shipwreck and founded the first capital of St. George in 1612. The first slaves were brought from Africa in 1616 and formalized in the British colonization in 1684. The archipelago became British in 1707 with the creation of Great Britain (the unification of England and Scotland).

In the early twentieth century , while transportation and communication were booming, Bermuda became a very fashionable destination for wealthy British tourists, American and Canadian. Moreover, tariffs erected in 1930 by the U.S. against its trading partners had to reduce considerably the agricultural exports of Bermuda.

These agricultural exports, which were once thriving, concerned mainly vegetables fresh. This new situation prompted the territory of British overseas to develop a tourism industry that is now behind international trade through its economic importance.

During the Second World War , Bermuda became an important military base because of their position in the Atlantic Ocean. In 1941 , the U.S. passed an agreement with the United Kingdom. In exchange for the sale of destroyers Americans, the British conceded to the Americans, for a period of 99 years, land in order to establish military bases and naval air.

From 1 September 1995 , the two U.S. bases stopped working as well as British and Canadian bases.
