History
The Siboney Antigua and Barbuda lived since -2400. Then came the Arawaks and the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus landed there in 1493 during his second voyage. They were first settled by Spaniards and French , followed by the English. In 1674 , Christopher Codrington established the first large sugar plantation on the island of Antigua. The only village Barbuda bore his name. Codrington and the other owners did bring slaves from the west coast of Africa.
In the eighteenth century , Franais Harbour on the south coast of Antigua, housed a large part of the British fleet, commanded a time, Admiral Nelson. This site is well cashed and barely visible from the sea, was known as a "hole in Cyclone , a safe haven.
Slavery was abolished in 1834. Unlike other British colonies who chose the immediate abolition followed by a learning period during which the slaves are still serving their former masters (until 1838), settlers Antigues choose the immediate abolition without learning.
In 1981 , Antigua and Barbuda became independent and joined the Commonwealth. She joined the 18 June 1981 at the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
